Year 7: Smart Cells Criterion B: Developing Ideas

      Criterion B: Developing Ideas

In this section you transfer you ideas into a visible working/operation plan

Strand 1: Develop design specifications, which clearly states the success criteria for the design of a solution

üDesign specification are the features that you want to include/see in your final product( the Budget).
üTesting is a way of confirming or proofing that indeed your design specification have been achieved or that you implemented your design specification.
üCome up with at least 8 design specification which are SMART

Your Design Specification should be SMART

S-they should be specific
M-they should be measurable
A-they should be achievable
R-they should be realistic; it should be possible to achieve
T- Time bound- achievable within the assessment period

Example of Design Specification and Testing

What are Design Specifications and How are they written
What is a design specification?
A specification is a set of constraints, requirements and considerations for a solution: what the solution
must or must not have to be successful. A specification is not a description of the outcome. It should
demonstrate that you understand the needs of the problem that you have identified. Every aspect of a
specification must be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and testable (
SMART).
The specification should be directly connected to your design brief. Writing a specification can be a
difficult job if the design brief is not well researched and written.
If a solution or design fails to meet an
aspect of the specification, it can be considered that it has not met the criteria for success.
You will need to refer back to your specification throughout the project, particularly when developing
ideas and evaluating the solution.
The table below demonstrates poor and good examples of design specifications. Remember that these
should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and testable.

Strand 2: Develop a range of feasible design ideas that can be correctly interpreted by others

  • Here you come up with the designs for your budget. You draw/make very detailed designs using a pencil and a piece of paper clearly showing what will be included in your budget.
  • A natural starting place when designing is with a pencil and sheet of paper, developing rough sketches of potential solutions.
  • You should focus on getting the basic building blocks of ideas sketched out in short.
These initial ideas should focus on generating a range of different solutions to the problem(come with three different designs)

Strand 3: Present the Chosen Design

  • From the three designs that you made above, you will be required to present the chosen design and give the justification/reasons why you chose that design out of the three to use it to create your budget.
  • You will also highlight the improvements which you will make in your chosen design based on the ratings that have been made by your parent, client and peer/friend.
  • You will come up with 3 tables of rating which your client, peer/friend/classmate and your parent/dorm parent will use to rate your designs. Your designs will be rated by your client, peer and parent on account/using the design specifications. They will rate your designs based on whether the design specifications that you came up with  has been reflected/attained in your designs or not.
  • Each design will be awarded marks from the highest to the lowest with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. The total marks should be 40 based on the fact that you need to 8 design specifications and the maximum mark is 5 (8*5= 40)
  • The design you will choose for use for the creation of your budget should be the design which received the highest rating from your client, peers and parent and partly fullfilled all the design specifications.
Your table of rating should look like the one below

Strand 4: Create a planning; diagram which outlines the main details for making the chosen solution.

  • In this step, you will show the steps you will follow to complete your task (create your budget). Use the design specifications that you made to guide you on the steps to follow to create the budget.
  • Follow the format in the table below to describe the steps you will follow to create your budget.
  • The description of task for each step-represents the steps that you are going to follow when creating the budget such as watching a video tutorial on how to make a budget, creating the title for the budget, creating the income section and populating it with items, inserting values or numbers in kshs or dollars for each items of income section and many others.
  • The resources required are items that you will need to create your budget such as the laptop, chosen design-which describes the plan of the budget/how the budget looks like and the microsoft Excel or any other software you using to create the budget.
  • The duration represents the time it will take you to complete a specific step when creating the budget i.e 2 minutes to create the title.
  • The place or venue represents the place you will be working from when creating the budget for each particular step i.e making the title at home or school,
